十六世纪初期
古希腊的维卫拉琴和由古埃及阿拉伯摩尔人传入欧洲的鲁特琴是古典吉他和弗拉门戈吉他的雏型，在欧洲逐渐流行。当时具有代表性的音乐家有：唐·路易斯·米兰（西班牙）约翰·杜兰德（英国）西尔维乌斯·莱奥波德·魏斯（德国）文森佐·伽利略（意大利）
由于吉他当时只有四根弦，音乐的表现受到很大限制，划时代的比森特·埃斯皮内尔（西班牙）在四弦吉他的基础上增加了一根低音弦，从而大大丰富了吉他的表现力，最终确立了这一古老民间乐器的地位。至此，人们便把它称为“西班牙吉他”。

十八世纪中叶至十九世纪黄金时期
随着吉他不断深入人心，五弦吉他再也难以满足人们的欣赏要求，最终在许多音乐家的努力下出现了六弦吉他。特别是费尔南多·索尔（西班牙）迪奥尼西奥·阿瓜多（西班牙）约瑟夫·库夫纳（德国）费尔迪南多·卡路里（意大利）莫洛·朱利亚尼（意大利）马迪奥·卡尔卡西（意大利）这些大师的推广、普及，终于迎来了古典吉他灿烂的黄金时期。
  十九世纪中叶萧条时期
钢琴的出现制约了吉他的发展。古老的弹拨乐器在“乐器之王”面前显得一筹莫展。人们的视线已经转移，吉他正走向衰退······然而，这些人：胡利安·阿尔卡斯（西班牙）何塞·费雷尔（西班牙）拿破仑·柯斯特（法国）朱利奥·雷孔第（意大利）依然孜孜不倦地耕耘着这片热土。特别是“近代吉他制作之父”安东尼奥·托雷斯（西班牙）对吉他制作的改良使得吉他的音色近乎完美，也使人们看到了古典吉他希望的曙光。

  十九世纪末叶至二十世纪全盛时期
感谢上帝为我们创造了弗朗西斯科·泰勒加（西班牙）。他就象照亮暗黑森林的阳光，他独特的吉他音乐如雨露般滋润着这片即将枯竭的土地，为古典吉他带来了又一个明媚的春天。他的弟子们：米格尔·柳贝特（西班牙）丹尼尔·福特亚（西班牙）埃米利奥·普霍尔（西班牙）不懈的努力，为古典吉他的不断发展打下了坚实的基础。


    本世纪鼎盛时期
该是收获的季节了。古典吉他在这些大师：德·拉·马萨（西班牙）阿古斯丁·巴里奥斯（意大利）维拉·罗伯斯（巴西）安东尼奥·劳罗（委内瑞拉）朱利安·布里姆（英国）约翰·威廉斯（英国）山下和仁（日本）的传播下已广泛地流行于世界各地。特别是安德烈斯·塞戈维亚（西班牙）个人传奇式的努力，使古典吉他达到了一个前所未有的境界，也受到音乐界人士的高度重视，真正确立了古典吉他这一古老弹拨乐器在音乐领域的地位。作为吉他爱好者，都有责任和义务为吉他事业作出应有的贡献！
  如今，以纳西索·耶佩斯（西班牙）为代表的新一代吉他大师们创造了十弦吉他，为古典吉他的发展又开辟了一个新的领域。

吉它类型：
古典吉他
吉他演奏中艺术性最强的一种。通常以独奏或二重奏的形式出现，一般以演奏传统的古典音乐为主。吉他的造型优美、典雅，指板扁平且略宽，音箱较厚。装有六根尼龙弦，共19个音品，指板与音箱衔接处为12音品。音孔呈圆形，下方无挡板。面板和底板都呈水平面。广泛流行于世界各地。

民谣吉他
    美国西部乡村音乐的主要伴奏乐器。通常作为歌曲的伴奏形式出现，以美国西部乡村音乐为主要演奏题材。比古典吉他略长，音箱较大，棱角呈方形。指板稍细，表面呈弧形。音孔比较大，下侧有挡板。指板与音箱连接处是14音品。经常装有六根金属弦。流行于美国西部等地。
匹克吉他
    极富个性的吉他种类。通常以乐队的形式出现，以爵士音乐和摇滚乐为主要演奏题材。有木吉他和电吉他之分。一般装有六根金属弦，用特制的弹片演奏。木吉他的式样与民谣吉他类似。音箱的面板和底板呈弧状，与小提琴相似。音孔有一般的圆形也有类似提琴的f孔。电吉他的式样多变。一般通过电磁感应器获得电流，再经由放大器从扬声器发音。配上合适的效果器可得到特殊的音色。广泛流行于世界各地。
　
弗拉门戈吉他
    西班牙民族乐器的主要种类。通常作为民族舞蹈的伴奏形式出现，以西班牙民族音乐为主要演奏题材。吉他的式样与古典吉他相似但体形略小，音箱也较薄。流行于西班牙、葡萄牙等地。
夏威夷吉他
流行于美国夏威夷的一种拨弦乐器。通常作为夏威夷草裙舞的伴奏形式出现，现在也经常独奏。吉他的式样与民谣吉他相似，只是演奏姿势与方法大相径亭。夏威夷吉他一般装有六根金属弦，并调成E-A-E-A-#C-E。演奏时，端坐在无扶手的椅上，将吉他横置于双腿上，左手持一圆柱形金属棒压弦，右手各指带金属假指甲拨弦弹奏。现在多制成电吉他的形式。
勒多金吉他
    多见于南美洲的一种小型木吉他。通常作为民族舞蹈的伴奏形式出现，以南美民族音乐为主要演奏题材。吉他的体型很小，装有四或六根弦，用拨子弹奏。音色清澈、明亮。流行于秘鲁、哥伦比亚等南美国家。
