首先，这个奇怪的名字代表的并不是一支乐队，而只是一名原名为john ondrasik的歌手． 97年ondrasik以five for fighting作为自己的艺名，发行了第一张专辑。ondrasik不仅是歌手和作曲家，还是吉他手和钢琴家，也是一个针砭时弊的人和一个评论家。　
　　其次，Five For Fighting意思来自于曲棍球罚则,指的是被罚下场五分钟等候再度上场的球员．Ondrasik借这一笔名, 融合自己身为钢琴家/讽刺作家/时事评论家的多重身分, 努力地让别人听见自己的歌曲,用自己的热情去实践歌曲与意念的真谛．
997年，John Ondrasik 以“Five For Fighting”这个名字在Capitol公司发行了他的首张个人专辑《Message for Albert》。他认为自己主要是一个歌手，作曲家，但他也是称职作为一个吉他手和钢琴家。
三年之后，Five For Fighting的第二张专辑《America Town》通过Columbia正式发行。在这张专辑中，John Ondrasik的歌曲不仅一如既往的歌颂爱与生命，而且开始逐渐偏向政治，而Ondrasik的创作才华开始得到越来越多歌迷的认可。随着专辑中动人的钢琴情歌《Superman (It's Not Easy)》，《America Town》的销量很快也突破了白金。在“911”事件之后，John Ondrasik在当年冬天举办的纪念演唱会中演唱了这首《Superman (It's Not Easy)》，使得这首歌曲更加的深入人心。
2004年2月，Five For Fighting发行了第三张专辑《The Battle for Everything》。这张专辑是Five For Fighting最有野心，也是歌词最为大胆的一张专辑。
2006年8月，Five For Fighting第四张录音室专辑《Two Lights》出炉。本张专辑发行首周以5万2千张的单周销量名列Billboard 200专辑榜第八位，成为Five For Fighting迄今为止首周销量最高，打榜成绩最好的专辑。
